Galantis VR
Church of Galantis — live interactive virtual broadcast
In December 2019 at Wave I was tasked with generating the artistic direction for an upcoming virtual concert with the live drumming & DJ duo Galantis.
The show was built around the concept of the “Church of Galantis” — church as a metaphor for a congregation united by community, support and appreciation for each other — drawing on the new album’s colorful, textural art direction inspired by animals, insects and religious architecture. I led the visual direction and built the core VFX systems bringing that concept to life, from a custom low-poly shader animating crystalline, stained-glass tendrils to systems for live MIDI-driven drum stick visualization and crowd choreography.

The concert in VR
Challenges
- Very tight deadline & limmited team
- Show was a live interactive broadcast and also in VR on Wave’s platform
- Had to direct and also prodcue majority of the content of the show
- Galantis did live drumming, without proper stick tracking and using an XSens system, had to design aroudn this
- No C# and pre VFX Graph, had to create custom VFX through shaders and meshes pre-packed with custom data

My role
- Directed all content for the show
- Created a majority of the vfx, cameras, lighting and animations
- Built a low-poly shader system animating crystalline, stained-glass tendrils, working around the no-custom-scripts constraint via pre-packed mesh data and a custom vertex shader
- Designed and built a MIDI-triggered drum stick visualizer, driven by the performers’ Roland sampling pads
- Designed and built a crowd system that scattered/offset XSens dance animations across avatars, with dynamic “energy level” transitions
