Brian Eno - Bloom
HoloLens installation
The sound design agency Listen approached me to help pitch an interactive installation to Brian Eno. Users wearing a HoloLens would create tones visualized as floating holographic orbs — essentially a 3D mixed reality version of Eno’s Bloom iPhone app.
Within 2 days I created a working demo / prototype in HoloLens using Unity, using only the original Bloom app on the iphone as my guide. We used the prototype to demo the concept in person to Peter Chilvers, creator of the original Bloom iOS app and Brian Eno’s collaborator. The prototype was a success as he immediatey got a sense of what the final version could be and saw the value in doing the installation.
Installation
Guests stepped in a central zone surrounded by screens, where they physically experienced Bloom - tapping the air around them to create elaborate patterns and unique melodies with the simplest of gestures.
Prototype
The prototype explored these areas:
- Visualizing the tone of the sound (shader, animation and FX look development)
- How you create the sound-producing orbs
- hand ray vs. head ray for location
- Spatial sound design
- UX
- How many orbs can be active at once?
- How do we ensure a seamless experience if sounds must be capped?
- How do we map input to different sound pitches, and help users discover this mapping?
